We know you have questions, and we believe you deserve clear, honest answers. Here are the 20 questions we hear most often.
Neurofeedback is a non-invasive form of brain training that uses real-time monitoring of your brainwave activity, as described by the International Society for Neuroregulation & Research, to teach your brain to function more efficiently. During a session, sensors read your brain's electrical patterns through EEG technology while you watch a movie. Over time, your brain learns to self-regulate. There is no medication involved. Learn more on our What Is Neurofeedback page.
Neurofeedback can benefit a wide range of people, from children with ADHD to adults dealing with anxiety, sleep problems, or brain fog. It is also used by athletes and professionals for peak performance. The best way to find out if it is right for you is to schedule a free 15-minute consultation.
A qEEG (quantitative electroencephalogram) brain map is a painless, non-invasive recording of your brain's electrical activity. We place a snug cap with 19 sensors on your scalp and record for about 30 minutes. The data is then compared to a qEEG certification training" target="_blank" style="color:#4f709c;text-decoration:underline;">normative database of healthy brains matched to your age, revealing which areas are out of balance. Visit our Brain Mapping page for the full details.
Your first visit is a $99 qEEG Brain Map. This includes the approximately 30-minute recording, professional analysis through the NewMind platform against a normative database, a detailed brain map report, and a follow-up consultation. Our clinical team also offers a free 15-minute consultation. See our full Pricing page for details.
No referral is needed. Anyone can schedule a brain map or neurofeedback session directly. You can book online 24/7 or call us at (830) 375-8484.
Most people describe neurofeedback sessions as relaxing and even enjoyable. You sit comfortably in a chair while small sensors on your scalp read your brainwave activity. You watch a movie, show, or listen to music, and the media responds to your brain in real time. There is no electrical stimulation, no pain, and no discomfort. Many clients say it is the most relaxing part of their week. Visit our What to Expect page for a full session walkthrough.
Each neurofeedback training session takes approximately 45 minutes from start to finish. This includes setup time, the actual training period (usually about 30 minutes of active training), and wrapping up. The initial brain map appointment is similar in length.
Most clients see meaningful improvement within 15 to 30 sessions, consistent with clinical research. The number depends on the condition being addressed, the severity of symptoms, and how your individual brain responds to training. After reviewing your brain map through the NewMind system, we will give you a realistic estimate.
Yes. We offer a home neurofeedback rental program for families who prefer the convenience of training at home or who live outside the Boerne area. You use the same professional-grade equipment we use in the office, with remote support and protocol adjustments from our team. Absolutely. Neurofeedback is non-invasive and does not introduce any electrical signals into the brain, as confirmed by the BCIA. It is safe for children ages 6 and up, and the American Academy of Pediatrics recognizes it as a Level 1 intervention for ADHD. Many families use it as a medication-free approach to help with attention, anxiety, and behavioral challenges.
Yes. Neurofeedback has been studied for over 50 years and is supported by a growing body of peer-reviewed research. The American Academy of Pediatrics rates neurofeedback as a Level 1 Best Support intervention for ADHD. Studies also show benefits for anxiety, PTSD, sleep disorders, traumatic brain injury, and more.
Some clients notice subtle changes within the first few sessions, such as sleeping better, feeling calmer, or having an easier time focusing. For most people, noticeable and consistent improvement develops over 10 to 20 sessions through neuroplasticity. The brain needs time and repetition to build new neural pathways, as documented by the NIMH.
In many cases, yes. Neurofeedback trains your brain to create new, healthier neural pathways through neuroplasticity. Once those pathways are well-established, follow-up studies show the improvements tend to hold. Some clients choose occasional maintenance sessions, but many maintain their results for years.
Many families come to us specifically because they want to reduce or eliminate medication, and many do achieve that goal. However, we always recommend working with your prescribing physician — and our Rivers Edge clinical team can help coordinate that conversation. Research shows neurofeedback and medication can work well together, and as the brain learns to self-regulate, the need for medication often decreases.
Neurofeedback has been shown to help with a wide range of conditions including ADHD, anxiety and depression, PTSD, sleep disorders, traumatic brain injury and concussion recovery, migraines, autism spectrum challenges, learning disabilities, OCD, and more. It is also used by athletes, executives, and students for peak performance and cognitive enhancement.
In most cases, neurofeedback is not covered by standard health insurance plans. While the evidence base continues to grow, most insurers still classify it as investigational. However, some plans do offer partial reimbursement for out-of-network biofeedback services. We provide superbills with CPT codes 90901 (biofeedback) and 95816 (EEG) that you can submit to your insurance company for potential reimbursement. See our Pricing page for more details on insurance and reimbursement.
Yes. Neurofeedback is eligible for Health Savings Account (HSA) and Flexible Spending Account (FSA) funds. This means you can use pre-tax dollars to pay for your brain map and training sessions, effectively reducing your out-of-pocket cost by 20 to 35 percent depending on your tax bracket. We accept HSA and FSA cards as payment.
Just bring yourself with clean, product-free hair. Avoid heavy styling products like gel, hairspray, or leave-in conditioner before your appointment, as they can interfere with the sensors. You do not need to bring any paperwork or previous medical records, though you are welcome to share any relevant information about your health history during your visit.
Yes, and we encourage it. Having a light meal or snack and staying hydrated before your session helps ensure your brain is functioning at its best during the recording or training. Avoid excessive caffeine or sugar right before your appointment, as these can temporarily alter your brainwave patterns. A normal, balanced meal is ideal.
